AL HAJ M.I.M. NALEEM (04.04.1933 - 27.09.2005)

Far more than simply an entrepreneur, the late Mr. Naleem Hajiar was also an energetic and dedicated philanthropist, social reformer and religious worker. A community leader of remarkable vision, he first made his mark in one of Sri Lanka’s great traditional professions, the gem trade, which he in turn helped to transform into a thriving and modernized industry. In the 1970s he became one of the country’s leading exporters of precious stones, attaining international recognition in the process.  The Sri Lankan Government exclusively solicited his advice when setting up the State Gem Corporation in 1971, and therefore the initial success of this governmental body was partly attributed to his unstinting support.

The Finance Minister of the time, Dr.N.M.Perera publicly opined that the economic crisis then facing Sri Lanka could not have been overcome without the help of contributions from the gem industry. What’s more, Mr. Naleem Hajiar even rose to the extent of contributing during the oil crisis of 1974 and hence a substantial amount in Foreign Exchange was earned by the Sri Lankan government at a time when the country’s coffers were nearly empty.
Feeding the Nation

Mr. Hajiar’s decision to enter the poultry Industry was not entirely entrepreneurial.  It was his aspiration that the economy of Sri Lanka and the welfare of its people would both benefit greatly from the development of such an industry, as poultry would provide a culturally acceptable source of quality animal protein at an affordable price - something for which there was a great need at the time in the country.  Moreover, poultry could be farmed successfully using mainly domestic inputs, thereby conserving precious Foreign Exchange that might otherwise have been spent on imports of meat or animal feed.

Accordingly, he officially initiated the M.I.M. Naleem Hajiar and Company Ltd in 1975 and subsequently commenced breeding broiler chickens on a modern industrial scale under the Bairaha brand.  From the outset, the Company employed only Sri Lankan workers who were well trained both at home and abroad.  At first, the business did not pay well, but upon perseverance and patience, he eventually developed a sustainable business model for the entire industry in due course of time!

In 1994, the M.I.M. Naleem Hajiar and Company Ltd officially gained public exposure as Bairaha Farms Ltd. During this period of time, Mr. Naleem Hajiar remained in charge as the President of the company.  As this flagship throve and prospered much bountifully, it also was quick at attaining and retaining pre-eminence in the Sri Lankan poultry industry by making Bairaha a household term amongst fellow Sri Lankans. The company’s flourishing success thus encouraged more entities to enter this industry, which furthermore developed and provided employment to thousands of workers as a result.

Now much diversified and mature, Sri Lanka’s poultry industry now bears a constitution along cutting-edge technology and modern science which conclusively keeps the country free from diseases that originate from poultry, such as avian influenza and the like. Needless to say, the late Mr. Naleem Hajiar deserves to be accredited for the stringent standards that he pioneered over the Bairaha brand, empowering, influencing and paving the way for establishing superior grade value for the rest of this market sector.

Recognition by the State

Passing away on the 27th of September 2005, our beloved former President and Founder, the late Mr. M.I.M. Naleem Hajiar was privileged to enjoy over thirty years of association with Bairaha and offer leadership to its entire workforce, first as Chairman of the Group and later as the President.

The late Mr. Hajiar’s great and varied services to the country were acknowledged by H.E. The former President of Sri Lanka Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in the following tribute, paid on the occasion of his death.

“Al Haj Naleem was a devout Muslim and distinguished personality who won the admiration of all who knew of him.  His innumerable acts of charity during his lifetime will be long remembered.

The late Mr. Hajiar rose from humble beginnings to become one of Sri Lanka’s most illustrious businessmen and a gracious philanthropist.  He was respected by all for his honesty and integrity.  His name will be cherished by future generations. I am aware he donated much of his wealth to the development of education and to the welfare of the disabled and orphans.

He revolutionized the gem trade, which had been the monopoly of a few individuals, by encouraging others to take up this trade.  Naleem Hajiar gained international stature as a gem businessman.

Naleem Hajiar was a national figure and was respected by all communities in Sri Lanka.  He is known to have declined public office on several occasions.  His commitment to economic, educational and cultural development of this country and his community is worthy of emulation”

The President’s words were more than borne out by the presence of thousands of people from all walks of life, representing all of Sri Lanka’s communities and religions, at his funeral.

May the Almighty shower his choicest blessings to him in Jennathul Firdouse.

Ameen.
