We, islanders, love our spices and any authentic Sri Lankan chicken recipes would call for a good mix of exotic spices. Spice mixtures, in particular, are a very convenient way of boosting the flavour of food while also supporting your health in a number of ways. And the best part? These spice blends just take a few minutes to prepare but pack a punch in terms of flavour.

Preparing your own spices allows you to prepare food quickly and easily and here is one absolutely amazing immunity spice mix that uses a blend of 7 spices that are nutritional powerhouses that can support your immune system, reduce inflammation, help in weight loss and soothe anxiety.

Turmeric is known for being a detoxifying agent with antiseptic and antibacterial properties that cleanse the liver. It is known to reduce the risk of cancer and also help in weight management. People with Alzheimer’s, arthritis and depression can find turmeric very helpful as well. Black pepper is another spice with anti-inflammatory properties. When coupled up with turmeric, black pepper enhances the bioavailability of the active ingredient curcumin 3-fold. As far as stabilizing blood sugar levels are concerned, cinnamon helps greatly in that. It’s also effective in balancing digestion and curbing bacterial growth.

Cumin is another famous spice that balances blood sugar, improves energy, supports digestion and the proliferation of good microbes. Similarly, coriander is a detox spice that is high in vitamin C and is best when combined with fennel, which is one of the best spices to relieve constipation and stimulate the secretion of digestive juices. Of course, ginger is not to be forgotten – it’s a great way of killing bad bacteria and viruses and being the natural anti-inflammatory spice that it is, ginger also relaxes the intestinal tract.

Mixing all of the above-mentioned spices can go a long way in keeping you fit and healthy. So let’s dive right into one of the best chicken recipes in Sri Lanka where this immunity-boosting spice mix is used to generously coat chicken breasts which will then be grilled to create an appetizing culinary treat that will delight your taste buds and support your health at the same time.

Ingredients for the spice mix

  • 3 tbsp turmeric
  • 1 ½ tbsp ground cumin
  • 1 ½ tbsp ground coriander
  • 1 ½ tbsp ground fennel
  • 1 ½ tsp dry ginger
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • ⅛ tsp cinnamon
  • 1 ½ tsp sea salt

For the grilled chicken

  • 2 chicken breasts
  • 3 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp of the immunity spice mix

Start off by slicing the chicken breasts in half horizontally so you are left with four pieces. This way, your chicken will cook faster and the spices will not burn as well.

For the immunity spice mix, mix all the ingredients together and store in a glass jar. Spread out about one tablespoon of the spice mix onto a plate. Then, rub both sides of the chicken with a little bit of coconut oil and press each side of the chicken onto the spices. Ensure that the chicken is lightly covered with the spices.

Next, add some oil on a plate and place the chicken on the oil to lightly coat both sides. Then, place the chicken on a hot grill and grill for three minutes until it has browned lightly. Flip the chicken over and allow it to grill on the other side for a further 3 minutes until it is well cooked through and is firm to the touch. Serve either hot or cold – it’s delicious either way!
